The ancestors of most European and North American domestic geese, greylags
(species: Anser anser) are large in size, pale grey in colour, with pink legs, orange
beak and are easily identifiable in flight by the pale leading edge to the underside of
their wings. They are said to get their name from the fact that they are among the last
migratory birds to leave for warmer winter climes — thus ‘lagging’ behind!
